May 31, 2006 Running Scared by Anthony King
244 pages. Finished 05/07/06.

This is an interesting study of the campaign process. I used it as part of my paper on my internship in Washington last summer. It's one of my advisor's favorite books. Written by a Brit looking in on the US's exceptional (in terms of being the exception, not the rule) electoral system, King reveals some startling and not-so-startling facets of the permanent campaign for office in the United States. If you want to study Congress, start here.

May 03, 2006 The Cheese and the Worms by Carlo Ginzburg
128 pages. Finished 05/01/06.

An interesting look at the Inquisition coming to Italy in the 16th century from the view of a village eccentric. Can the subaltern speak? Does microhistory really tell us anything beyond the person profiled? Perhaps. Either way, Ginzburg's tale is well organized and interesting to read. And Menocchio is a crazy cat - that's for sure!
